NBA Live 09 Review

NBA Live 09's gameplay has again seen some improvement, but there are still a few rough edges.

The Good

• Signature playcalling makes running plays a breeze
• New pick-and-roll mechanic is simple and effective
• User-friendly controls
• Marv Albert and Steve Kerr do a nice job in the booth.

The Bad

• Lousy defense leads to lots of dunks
• Dribble moves are too often ineffective
• Be a Pro mode isn't very deep.

  

NBA Live has had a rough transition to the current generation of consoles; however, slowly but surely, the games have gotten better every year. NBA Live 09 doesn't make the same leap forward that 08 made, and the much-hyped dynamic DNA feature has little effect on the gameplay. However, new pick-and-roll controls, as well as signature playcalling, make this Live the best in several years.

Grand Theft Auto IV Review

A superb single-player story mode and online support for up to 16 players make this the best Grand Theft Auto game yet.

The Good

• Superb character-driven story
• Liberty City really does feel alive
• Multiplayer modes that let 16 players go wild across the entire city
• Genuinely funny radio and TV shows, comedy acts, and character dialogue
• Controls are much improved over previous games.

It's hard to talk about what Valve's The Orange Box offers without immediately falling into an impression of some sort of late-night pitchman for fantasy knives and alternative cleaning products. That's partially because the name "The Orange Box" sounds more like some kind of citrus-scented bathroom cleanser than a video game, and partially because this five-games-in-one package is the kind of crazy deal that almost forces you to shout "Now how much would you pay?" With three amazing new games and two classics all in one package, it's impossible to go wrong with The Orange Box.

You'll need both Alyx and the gravity gun if you want to survive.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare moved the Call of Duty franchise away from World War II and into a modern battlefield. This first person shooter focuses on modern infantry warfare set mainly in the Middle East. The single player campaign puts players in the role of US and British soldiers. The multiplayer mode will include a somewhat customizable class based system of game play simliar to those found in many multiplayer first person shooters.

World in Conflict

World in Conflict is a real-time tactical game (a.k.a. real time strategy) set in 1989 just before the fall of the Soviet Union. However in World in Conflict, the Soviet Union does not fall and the world spirals into conflict. The game contains three game modesl; a single player campaign, skirmish mode and multiplayer mode. Players can choose from one of two factions in the single player campaign (USA or Nato), while multiplayer allows for play as USA, NATO or the Soviet Union.

BioShock - IInd

BioShock is a superb game on all levels. The game play and features are fresh and exciting while the game's environments and graphics are a visual delight to the eyes. However it's the compelling storyline that will captivate, pull you in, and leave you wishing for more when it's all over.

Crysis - 1st

Electronic Arts
Crysis has some hefty system requirements but this is what PC gaming is all about. The engaging game play, open ended levels along with spectactular graphics make this first person shooter the best game in a year with a lot of great titles. Set in 2019, Crysis puts players in the role of Jack Dunn, a Delta Force agent, as he trys to save the planet, battling aliens with all types of state of the art weapons and equipment. Cryis contains a detailed single player campaign and multiplayer mode which supports up to 32 players.

NHL ’09

Ice Hockey might be a decidedly niche sport here in the UK but, as with American Football, it’s also one with which gamers are surprisingly familiar.

Electronic Arts’ yearly console updates for the NHL series have informed generation after generation of gamers of the intricacies of pucking, barging and on-ice fisticuffs and NHL ’09, as you might expect, is the best yet. Indeed, for those older players who have fond memories of battling it out head-to-head in NHL ‘94, there’s even the option to revert to a classic controller configuration that mimics that first seen on the Sega Megadrive.

For those wanting the modern configuration the game builds on the ‘skill stick’ system as seen in the previous two iterations. Here your right analogue stick acts as your hockey stick. Pressing left or right will deke the puck, up will execute a snap shot, down then up a slap shot and to the side and up a wrist shot. With us so far? It might seem a little overwhelming on paper but the system lends your character a pleasing level of control that ensures, when you do manage to skate around the defence and blast one past a befuddled goalie, the sense of achievement is great.

Defence control is just as nuanced. You can deliver poke checks; stick lifts (which if timed correctly will knock the attacker’s stick away from the puck) and even pull your opponent’s skates from underneath him. These additions to the skill stick control system certainly make for a more realistic game of hockey, forcing genuine strategy on the part of the player to both attack and defend effectively. Indeed, it’s a lot harder to score in this title than it has been in previous iterations and, truth be told, the game is all the stronger because of it.

The tutorials that guide you through the control scheme's complexities are well designed and informative, explaining strategy as well as the basic interactive techniques. And remember, if it all gets a bit too much you can set the game to NHL ’94 mode and shove the realism.

Be A Pro mode is a new addition in which you create a character, assign him a team and then try to work your way through the ranks of unknown to legend. Experience points earned during matches can be spent on upgrading his abilities and, as with Madden’s similar Superstar mode, it’s a lot of fun for those with the time to build an RPG-style character.

Excellently realised player models and smooth animations ensure NHL ‘09 looks the part while ESPN presenters Gary Thorne an Bill Clement commentate on the action with astounding believability. By raising its game across almost all play areas NHL ’09 establishes itself as the sport’s leader in hockey games, another jewel in EA’s ever-improving crown of sports titles.

Newz - FIFA 09 SHIFTS OVER A MILLION IN FIRST WEEK [X360]

Clearly the fan's favourite, at least until Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 arrives. Over 1.2 million copies sold across Europe though. Crikey!

FIFA 09 has become the fastest selling edition since the franchise begain, says EA. More than 1.2 million copies flew off store shelves last week, propelling the realistic football title to number one in the all-formats chart. The new game features a couple of revolutionary online features; adidas Live Season which updates player stats on a weekly basis, and 10 vs 10 online gameplay. However these brilliant new modes are only available to PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 gamers. FIFA 09 is available across all formats including DS, Wii and PSP.

Let's see what Konami's PES 2009 has to say about all this when it launches on 17 October. Meanwhile, congratulations to EA and FIFA 09. We'd say the game truly deserves it this year. In fact we did say this in our review last week, so there you go.

Undercover

Electronic Arts studio Black Box has announced multiplatform racing title Need For Speed Undercover, which will star Mission Impossible III actress Margaret Quigley, or Maggie Q.

Quigley will play a handler in Need For Speed Undercover's Tri-City Bay Area and will serve as the lead character in the game's live-action sequences.

As a handler, she will recruit and guide players as they go undercover to infiltrate and take down an international crime syndicate. Players will complete dangerous jobs, compete in street races, and take part in cop chases along the way.

Need for Speed Undercover is scheduled to ship to stores in North America on November 18 and in Europe on November 21. The game will be available for Xbox360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Wii, Nintendo DS, PC, iPhone, and mobile handsets.
